Biography

β€œThe tree of my life has its roots in the old world but it blossomed in Brooklyn.” - Magoni, 2021.

Despo Magoni was born raised, and studied art in Athens, Greece, but it was after she moved to New York City in 1968 that she found her own voice as an artist. The energy, diversity and contradictions of the urban environment inspired her to develop an expressionist visual vocabulary. Working with painting, works on paper, and artists books she addressed the complexities of life by merging the individual with the collective, the inner with the outer world, and the past with the present. Since the early 2000s her work has turned more toward an abstract language exploring themes of science like anatomy, and the Cosmos.
