Salome

Salome is one of the most famous and potentially misunderstood women in the Bible.  She only appears in a few lines yet has inspired countless artworks, plays, poems and films.  Often cast as a femme fatale she is essentially a dutiful daughter being exploited by her father.  These paintings attempt to capture these contradictory complexities.  The Last Dance  follows the traditional narrative and depicts Salome presenting the head of John the Baptist to her father.  However in Salome’s Dream we see a personal act of rebellion and it is Herod’s head that she holds.
